What is Rolfing?
Rolfing is a form of bodywork also known as Structural Integration. It focuses on our connective tissue, or fascia, which lies under the skin and surrounds our muscles and organs. This protective layer gives muscles their shape and support. In a healthy state, fascia is elastic and moves freely. However, injury, stress, repetitive movements, and the effects of aging can all cause fascia to become shorter, tighter, and more dense. When fascia loses its elasticity, it can pull our muscles and skeleton out of proper alignment. The result is often pain, stiffness, discomfort, and fatigue. Rolfing works to lengthen, stretch, and soften our connective tissue to restore postural balance and ease of movement.
What is a Rolfing session like?
Rolfers use a range of techniques to lengthen and reposition the fascia and the body. A practitioner may use slow, deep, stretching movements, or constant applied pressure. You may also be asked to move as pressure is applied or to stand and move during a session. As tissue is being released, you may experience a variety of sensations ranging from warm and pleasant to uncomfortable. Your practitioner will apply appropriate pressure during the session based on your feedback, so the pace is under your control. Movement education may also be a part of your Rolfing series. Your practitioner can help you become aware of your habitual and inhibiting movement patterns and help you change these patterns to achieve more fluid movement.
Many treatment plans are organized into a series of ten sessions, commonly referred to as "The Ten Series”, in order to systematically release the myofascial tissue. Each session builds upon the last, addressing layers of tissue throughout the process. The series is designed to balance your body in segments, with each session addressing a different aspect of your structure and movement. Though the Rolfing series is designed to work in sequence, your practitioner will often recognize your unique needs and use their skills and experience to address those areas appropriately.
